What is a Camp Sunrise Jr Volunteer?

The Camp Sunrise Jr Volunteer program is a brand new program here at Camp Warwick. This is an opportunity for our 8th grade Adventure Camp campers to experience Camp Sunrise before applying to be volunteers at 15 years old. Participants are paired with a Camp Sunrise Leadership Team Member to learn about what volunteers do and get the opportunity to get to know our campers.

This program is part of the Adventure Camp program but overseen by the Camp Sunrise Director. Campers who wish to participate must be registered for Adventure Camp that week, there is no additional cost to participate in this program. Campers will not miss any trips as a result of participating in this program. We will award service hours to participants.

This program will be available for Adventure Camp campers weeks 1-5! To participate you can add it to your cart during registration.

FAQ’s

When is this program available and how many weeks can I participate?
This program will be available weeks 1-5 while Camp Sunrise is in session. Adventure Camp campers who want to participate are encouraged to start with 1 session and then add more if the experience is a good fit for them.
What does it mean to be a Jr Volunteer?

As a Jr. Volunteer, you will be under the supervision of a Camp Sunrise Leadership Team Member. From Tuesday evening – Thursday morning you will work with your Leadership Team Member and learn about the responsibilities of a volunteer. You will have the opportunity to take on some responsibility alongside the Leadership Team Member for hands on experience but will never be left to do anything on your own.

How does it work?
You will be dropped off at Day Camp on Tuesday morning as usual and spend the day with your group. When pick up begins your Leadership Team Member will come to Day Camp and bring you to your assigned room for the next 2 nights. You will be able to settle in and have a chance to learn about your camper and responsibilities. You will then join Camp Sunrise at dinner and meet the camper(s) that you will be hanging out with. You will stay with Camp Sunrise all day Wednesday and then report back to Day Camp on Thursday after breakfast for the Wawayanda trip and be picked up during pick up time when you return.
What are my responsibilities?
As a Jr Volunteer, your main responsibility is to assist and learn from your Leadership Team Member. You will not be asked to provide personal care assistance but will be asked to spend time with and build relationships with campers. There will never be a time when you are alone with a camper or left without a Leadership Team Member or Director. This is an opportunity for you to get a taste of what being a volunteer is at Camp Sunrise is and start to figure out if this is something that you would want to do when you turn 15!
Who is the Camp Sunrise Leadership Team?
The Camp Sunrise Leadership Team is carefully selected to help plan and lead activities throughout the week with the Camp Sunrise Director and to support and mentor staff and volunteers. This team is selected from staff who have worked at Camp Warwick for 2+ years and are very familiar with campers, have experience working with people who have disabilities, and are highly trusted in all camp programs.
Where do I stay?
Jr. Volunteers will be given a room assignment in the East House. They will have 1-2 roommates. After the campers go to bed at night, staff has some time off to hang out and decompress, Jr. Volunteers will have structured activities available, time to process and ask questions, and will not be left unsupervised.
What kinds of activities does Camp Sunrise do?
On Tuesday night we either have bowling at Pin Street Bowling or an evening activity on the property. On Wednesday night, Camp Sunrise goes to the Warwick Drive In Movie Theater. They are transported on our vehicles and will get a free soda and popcorn.
Is there additional paperwork?
There will be an additional consent form for parents/guardians to complete for off site trips and to be included in Camp Sunrise social media. We also have a social media policy that we ask our staff and volunteers to abide by which will be provided to you at the start of the week you sign up for the Jr Volunteer program. The only additional paperwork that needs to be provided is a medication authorization form, if necessary.
What if I take medications?
If your camper takes medications in the evening or morning, you will need to submit a medication authorization form prior to the start of the session. This form can be found on our website and should be sent to you during the registration process as well. All medications must be in their original packaging with instruction labels intact and match the medication authorization form. The form and medication will be presented to the nurse who will ensure that everything is in order, keep the medication in her office, and administer it as instructed. The medication will be returned to you at the end of your time with Camp Sunrise.
Can I have my phone?
Yes. Our cell phone expectations are different with Camp Sunrise campers and with our volunteers and staff. It is okay for Jr. Volunteers have their phones with them and to use them but our expectation is that they are giving their attention to their responsibilities and to our campers. We encourage staff and volunteers to take photos but expect that they follow the guidelines set into place by our social media policy.
Is there an orientation?
Yes. We will have a few orientation options for Jr. Volunteers and parents/guardians. Jr. Volunteers will also participate in a brief orientation when they report to Camp Sunrise on Tuesday evening and have the opportunity to ask questions and get clarification before then. As always, the Camp Director and Program Directors are always available to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have.
